Supplements - Which Ones & Why

When I was overweight & in my 20’s, I was like many people at that age; uneducated about nutrition and desperate for immediate results. I bought & tried every product on the market that said anything that appealed to me. “LOSE 10 LBS IN JUST A FEW DAYS” . . . I bought it. “ELIMINATE CRAVINGS & SHRED FAT IN 1 DAY” . . . Bought it. I swear I single handedly kept the supplement industry in business. God forbid I consider eating right . . . nah, I’ll just take a diet pill for that!

Throughout the years, I've educated myself through research and of course trial & error. As much as I would love to have found a solid group of supplements I could take my whole life, that is just not realistic. As we go through life, there are certain variables that change our supplement needs.

  1. Lifestyle - Depending on what your current lifestyle entails, you will need certain supplements. Never out in the sun? Well then some Vitamin D is something you’ll be needing. Stressed? Well then a good B vitamin will help! You get the idea.

  2. Hormones - Getting your hormones checked each year will help you decide what your body needs more of, or is deficient in.

  3. Fitness Goals - If you have certain fitness goals, there are supplements that can help you reach those specific goals. Consulting with your trainer or nutritionist is a great way to guide you in the right direction instead of going blindly into the supplement abiss.

Once you’ve taken a clear look at what your current health & fitness goals are, THEN you can

delve into where to go and what to get. There are so many different supplements out there. Its can be SO overwhelming, right?! And trust me, you can waste a ton of money on bunk products. Though we all have different needs, here are the top current supplements that I myself swear by.

My Fave Pill Supplements:

  • CLA - CLA is a naturally occurring fatty acid, that is known for reducing fat mass, while increasing muscle mass. It is a good fat that is naturally present in foods such as beef and dairy products, but only in low levels, so obtaining enough CLA through diet alone is problematic. • Chlorophyll - This superfoods benefits include helping fight cancer, improving liver detoxification, speeding up wound healing, improving digestion, weight control, and protecting skin health. Recommended daily dosage is 100-300mg taken 3 times a day.

  • Vitamin D - Vitamin D strengthens your bones and immune function, helps reduce high blood pressure, and can even help you lose weight. Recommended daily dosage is apx 1000-4000 IU.

  • NAC - When it comes to keeping your liver healthy, & combating cold and flu symptoms; nothing quite compares to NAC. It provides protection against free radicals and toxins in the body & protects both the liver & kidneys. Dosage is 600mg twice daily.VV

  • Vitamin B6 - Of all the B vitamins, vitamin b6 is the most important as it aids in protein and amino acid metabolism, improves brain function, helps mood, prevents rheumatoid arthritis, & helps relieve symptoms of PMS. Recommended daily dosage is 100mg a day.

  • Cal/Mag - Multiple health benefits of calcium & magnesium include transmission of nerve impulses, body temperature regulation, detoxification, energy production, and the formation of healthy bones and teeth. Recommended daily dosage is 1000mg.
